War Hero or Villan? A Survivor of WW2’s Deadliest POW Camp
One of the Diggers has a pub/restaurant/museum, called Den Dreve in Zonnebeke. He is also the driving force behind the "Brothers in Arms" memorial.
My Dad did 3 tours to Nam on HMAS Sydney ''vung tau ferry'' and one on HMAS Hobart DDG39 on the Gun Line, one of the best blokes you could ever meet he used to show us old reels of refueling etc with Vampire in the scene and lots of R&R in the Far East", we basically grew up at Penguin as kids. RIP Dad. Thanks mate good Vid I Visited Vampire as a kid and Hobart when she was brand new from San Diego also Sydney and Melbourne Dad served on them all except Vampire... God Bless.
Rommel's asparagus were vertical poles placed in open fields and connected with cables to prevent gliders from using the fields to land.
Hi Jimmy. That’s the origin of the term, but the Allies also used it to describe the landing obstacles on the beaches.
what does cqd mean
It was the distress call prior to SOS. Although Titanic used both.
I found this very interesting. My grandfather was one of those English Soldier Settlers who arrived in 1922 from the city of Leicester. He was allocated a standard 700 acre block in the mallee in Koolonong (Victoria) with no water!. My grandmother arrived the next year with 4 small children. The scheme was a failure for many but somehow they made it eventually. They had several more children by the 1930s and eventually the”welfare” arrived and removed 6 of them. They were not able to get them back for four years. Two of those children attempted suicide after they returned and one succeeded. The cost was high for my grandparents.
Wow, what a tragic story. Thanks for sharing.
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow in Flanders fields. You are never forgotten.
what a wonderful achievement - well done that man
WASTE OF TIME & MONEY. LOOK NO FURTHER THAN SAIPAN.
So very sad my grandfather came back a broken man the gass terrible ❤❤❤❤❤to all those young who. Gave there lifes and there family's who lost so many loved ones
God bless the Commonwealth troops... Canadian family (New Brunswick 26th Battalion) and Scottish family (Royal Scots) served. Great uncle killed at Flanders. These videos are soooo important! Lest We Forget
Thank you!
A wonderful episode as always Mat, thanks mate!
Cheers Dave. 👍🏼
Awesome job Matt, wish I were there, but you've made me feel like I am! Keep them coming - thanks, Jeff
Thanks Jeff. I appreciate the comments.
Excellent reportage! 👌👌
Thank you!
Looking at him, he could be my son. My own sons both serve in the ADF, Navy, and Air Force. My eldest, he has a beard, not as long as Ned’s, obviously. It’s kept neatly groomed. And, the hair isn’t much different. My son has that heavy brow too. Just makes me sad. Such is life, I suppose 🍻
Hi just wondering if you know much about 452 Spitfire Squadron in Darwin, as my Uncle was a LAC with that Squadron and never wanted to talk about it, he was also a motorcycle messenger, and the only thing he ever said was when he was a messenger coming back to base, there was soldier laying on the side of the road , with half his head blown off. Anyway any info on my Uncle Robert Bruce Armstrong would be awesome, as I can't find out much about him or his 452 Squadron, like where we're they when Darwin was bombed etc I do have a couple of photos of him in the war but that's it. Anyway thanks in Advance Ian Armstrong
And to think, we watched the spectacle of hordes of aliens in London vandalizing British Great War monuments the past 9 months. Metro police are present but do nothing to stop it. (They arrest English people trying to protect the sacred memorials.
Look how beautiful Yres is. Now compare Ypres to Detroit, Portland, or St. Louis, which have never been in any wars.
UK never recovered from this battle. Its largely the reason Britain is in the condition it's in today.
What a waste of life. Maybe this is why, when I watch video of events in London, I don't see any English people.
😢
My grandfather was a stretcher bearer in passchendale
I am from USA going to Belgium in September for 2 weeks and renting a car and driving down the coast to Cherbourg. Thank you for your videos! I cant wait to visit Normandy!
My pleasure. Sounds like a great trip!
My son is there today paying his respects to the fallen fortunately his great grandad survived the great war.
So sad to hear the poor judge passed away the day after his ruling of MR Ned Kelly, something tells me he(THE JUDGE) should have been more "HUMANE" AND "FAIR"
Age of actors: Should check age of 2nd ranger battalion. There's some tough old dudes.
Hoping to be there for the 80th Anniversary commemorations.
Rich history. Thank you for sharing. I didn't know about the Egyptian stuff there along with WW2 and Victoria station close by. Looked like cipher on the station wall. A different version/variant of Germany modeled off Luxor during WW2. Cool history, so rich in information. Keep up the good work
Thanks for watching!
my uncle was KIA on July 14th at Le Mesnil-eury... the morning report is from July 17th. We were told it was friendly fire. Is that possible.? 9th division, 60th infantry.
Quite possibly. There was a lot of ordnance flying around.
Hi. What do you think would've happened in the Battle of Sommes if this feint was successful?
Great question. If the Aussies and British had successfully held onto their gains at Fromelles, it would have tied up the local German garrison and prevented it moving south to the Somme. But in the grand scheme of things that would have had a negligible effect on the outcome of the Battle of the Somme.
Well I didn't expect to see the name of Grandad's mates name in this clip but at 13.05 there it is. BAYLISS.E.F..... His service number only one different as they where together in the signup line
Is this a radio show? No pictures.
Savage human behavior for no real purpose at all.just sad
My dad spoke very little about beach landing, but said the hedgerow fighting was the worst. Was wounded outside Saint Lo.
Your first invasion map is incorrect for those invading Omaha Beach. The 1st Division is correct. The other division was the 29th , which my father was in in their 110 field artillery. I hope you can make the change for accuracy.
Ces de la merdes vivement un attentat le 6 juin pour ce débarrasser des connards comme macron
The deadliest battle of WW1, really?
Thanks Matt, My wife’s Grand Uncle, Henry Bell, I believe, was the 1st digger to be exhumed from the burial site and is the 1st to be buried at the new cemetery. We were there in 2010 for the opening and then again in 2019 after Henry Bell’s DNA was matched with my wife’s cousine in 2018.
Excellent. I have to say, as a Londoner, that photo of Wren's beautiful St Paul's Cathedral proudly standing amidst the smoke still gives me a direct emotional tug at the heart.
What is my personal information has to do with "sponsored" videos. My location information is my private property & Google has no right to use it without my permission.
"sponsored" lmao 😂🤣
Not only Australians but New Zealand is Canadians Indians and from the home nation UK
Yes, I mention all of those nations in the video. Including going to the Tyne Cot and Canadian memorials, and visiting the German cemetery.
Excellent narrative!
Thanks for listening
so sigma
Now look what’s going on in Australia the lefties aren’t even respecting veterans days 🥴🇬🇧
Why not an English person to do the prog?????
Thanks for the comment but you will find that, as in all the videos I produce, I am Australian. 👍🏼
The Battle of Britain meant Germany was in a long war...but a long war against Britain, which had no way to attack it on land.
As a learned historian, I agree with Peter entirety. It's definitely a horse.
With regards to Lambis' project we've just about got him convinced now that the anomalies he has found around Tommie's Trench are not indeed the Australians who fought and died in 2nd Krithia but probably British. Lt. Col Hughes when burying our dead wrote specifically that all the Australians had been reintered in the mass grave in Redoubt, but you never know. It might've been helpful if they had mentioned that there were unidentified Australians. With regards to Kevin's comment, I was showing him the previous remains we'd found at Hill 60 and Kevin himself found another significant set of remains, all in the NZ section of trenches.
Sorry Mat, missed the live event but catching up now. It's been an awesome month on the battlefield
Looking forward to seeing you over there soon mate!
